What is a Bar Citizen®?
Bar Citizen® is the community's name for local meetups of Star Citizen and Squadron 42 fans that are run by fans, for fans. Except for official “International Bar Citizen®” events hosted by CIG, these gatherings are entirely organized by the community.
Where are they held?
Despite the name, Bar Citizen® meetups aren’t just at bars! They can happen anywhere! The name is simply a playful twist on Star Citizen. It’s not about drinking, it’s about connecting. There have been Bowling Citizens, Pool Citizens, LAN/BYOC Citizens, Arcade Citizens, Board Game Citizens, etc. Most events are at restaurant's with a bar so that those under legal age to drink can attend.
Who can attend?
Everyone. Players, friends, and family are all welcome. Whether you’re a long-time backer, a brand new pilot, or just curious, you’re considered a “Bar Citizen” the moment you show up.
What to expect?
A friendly, inclusive space where fans gather to chat about the game, share in-game stories, and geek out over space. Many attendees don’t know anyone when they arrive, and that’s okay—it’s part of the fun. Extroverts and introverts alike are welcome; in fact, for some, Bar Citizen® events are the only social gatherings they attend.
The bottom line: Bar Citizen® is about community, not status. No matter your background, you’re invited to join, hang out, and enjoy the shared love of games and space.

Origins

On April 10, 2012, Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) was founded. Soon after, small groups of fans, many connected to the studio’s first five employees (Chris Roberts, Sandi Roberts, Erin Roberts, Ortwin Freyermuth, Ben Lesnick, and David Swoffard), began gathering informally in Austin, Texas, to share their excitement for Squadron 42 and the recently announced Star Citizen.

When Star Citizen was revealed at GDC on October 10, 2012, followed by its Kickstarter campaign a week later, community meetups grew quickly. CIG even hosted several semi-exclusive gatherings in Austin. These monthly events initially had no official name and were simply organized through the early RSI forums.

In 2013, the community held its first fan-led “convention” "Spider-Con" named after the newly revealed location in the Cathcart system. It took place the day before the first CitizenCon. While the event was well-received, the name Spider-Con never stuck for regular meetups.

The turning point came on June 27, 2014, when Michael Morlan suggested the term “Bar Citizen” on his YouTube show Galactic Inquiry. Shortly afterward, the Austin group asked if they could adopt the name for their gatherings. Michael agreed, and “Bar Citizen” soon spread to other cities. CIG later registered the term Bar Citizen®.

By January 2015, the Austin organizers launched the first dedicated Bar Citizen website (later replaced by a Discord community). In 2016, volunteers from several cities collaborated on the creation of BarCitizen.sc and helped grow larger regional Discord servers to support local meetups.

In 2022, CIG began hosting official “International Bar Citizen®” events in their studio cities, a tradition that continues today.

While this history highlights Austin’s key role in helping name "Bar Citizen®", it’s important to note that fans worldwide had already been organizing gatherings as early as 2012. Some of the first communities included the Portland/Seattle area in the U.S. and Manchester in the U.K.
